BOMBSHELL: THE LIFE OF HEDY LAMARR with special guest ALEXANDRA DEAN
On Saturday January 26 at 7:00pm
Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr fled an oppressive marriage to create a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies in the 1940s. She starred opposite such leading men as Clark Gable, James Stewart, Spencer Tracy, Paul Henreid, and Victor Mature and appeared in such films as Ziegfeld Girl, Boom Town, Tortilla Flat, White Cargo, Lady of the Tropics, Her Highness and the Bellboy, The Conspirators and Cecil B. DeMille’s Samson and Delilah. Behind the glamour and sex appeal, though, was a talented and inquisitive inventor who created a radio system that is now considered the basis of Bluetooth technology.
RiverRun Retro and Hanesbrands Theatre welcome filmmaker Alexandra Dean who will participate in an onstage discussion prior to screening her acclaimed documentary, Bombshell: The Life of Hedy Lamarr. The New York Times review of the film noted, “Alexandra relates Hedy Lamarr’s ventures, those onscreen and off, with savvy and narrative snap, fluidly marshaling a mix of original interviews and archival material.” In London, Peter Bradshaw’s review in The Guardian, stated, “This excellent documentary celebrates the glamorous Hollywood icon and brilliant engineer whose groundbreaking work led to Bluetooth and wifi. Alexandra Dean’s excellent and important documentary about her is very instructive – a parable of modern sexual politics and assumptions about science.” A reception with Dean will follow the screening. RiverRun Retro is sponsored by Nelson Mullins.
