Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance
July 11 – 13 at 7:30pm, 2019
Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, NC’s summertime professional contemporary ballet company, is thrilled to be returning to Winston-Salem with their critically acclaimed group of dancers handpicked from professional companies across the US.
This repertory show features Heather Maloy’s HUNGER, a work that dares to ask the question, “What do you hunger for?” This partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank was created to call attention to our region’s food insecurity crisis. At the root, we are all hungry. Most of us not in the strict use of the term, but we all have something that we crave. Told through high energy vignettes that range from funny to shocking, this audience favorite inspires the viewer to inspect the needs and desires that forge the trajectory of their lives, while contemplating how that path would be altered if the most basic needs, such as food, water and shelter, were not met.
Also included is AYT? (Are you there?), a world premiere by Heather Maloy featuring dancers… and their phones. A humorous statement on how technology, cell phones in particular, inhibits our ability to communicate and appreciate one another, this is bound to become a new Terpsicorps favorite.
To round out the program, Terpsicorps is bringing back a work created in Winston-Salem in 1990 for African American dance icon, Mel Tomlinson, when he was a member on the NC Dance Theatre. Extensions, created by Salvatore Aiello, is a solo that takes an in-depth look at the routines inherent in the life of a dancer. The dance world mourned the loss of Mel Tomlinson this year, and this recreation aspires to share with today’s audiences the magic that was made when these two remarkable artists came together.
Meet the 2019 dancers, handpicked from companies across the US.
